New Book, ‘Of Mothers & Daughters,’ Gives Readers A Rare Look Inside The Anomaly Of Mother-Daughter Dysfunction

Houston, TX – February 7, 2022 – Pittsburgh-native, author Arah Iloabugichukwu, has released a self-published book, sparking a much-needed conversation surrounding the unspoken subject of maternal toxicity.

Through her book, Of Mothers and Daughters, Arah seeks to spark dialogue on the prevalence of maternal abuse, particularly its prevalence and impact in minority communities, where single mother-led homes constitute over half of all households.

“My mother was my first bully. And while I knew that she loved me, I didn’t feel very liked. That mother-daughter dynamic would metastasize over time, spreading into self-doubt, low self-worth, and non-existent personal boundaries. For long, I believed it to be normal, my experience that is. And we’ve got this unspoken code of secrecy in Black and many minority communities, so you saw it everywhere, but weren’t free to speak about what you saw. Mother-daughter dysfunction was simply a conversation that didn’t come up, even the worst mothers received a Mother’s Day dedication where I grew up. To love your mother was a matter of moral duty, not reciprocity,” said Iloabugichukwu.

“This book looks at the impact of a strong Black mother from the lens of her children”, Iloabugichukwu added.

Set in Pittsburgh, PA in the 1990s, each page carries the bittersweet nostalgia of adolescence outlined in adversity. This story is filled with unsettling evidence of patriarchy’s impact on womanhood, sisterhood, and motherhood alike.

This book is the perfect read for parents who want to educate and equip themselves and their daughters to better navigate an unjust and gendered society.
