Professor emeritus of classics, William W. Fortenbaugh, works with 17 scholars across the globe to explore the works of Theophrastus in “Theophrastean Studies: On Natural Science, Physics and Metaphysics, Ethics, Religion and Rhetoric”.

William W. Fortenbaugh has taken another remarkable shot at exploring Theophrastus’ work on natural science, in particular the surviving treatises On Smells, On Stones and On Fire, with the release of the third volume in the Rutgers University Studies in Classical Humanities. Titled Theophrastean Studies: On Natural Science, Physics and Metaphysics, Ethics, Religion and Rhetoric, the work is a reflection of the growing international interest in Aristotle’s successor as Head of the Peripatos.

Theophrastean Studies: On Natural Science, Physics and Metaphysics, Ethics, Religion and Rhetoric is a work of seventeen scholars from six different countries sharing their wealth of knowledge on the subject. It focuses on Theophrastus’ work on natural science, in particular the surviving treatises On Smells, On Stones and On Fire.

The book explores Theophrastus’ studies in botany as well as in the fields of physics and metaphysics, including his analysis of place, the character of his short work on metaphysics and this work’s relationship to the larger Aristotelian treatise.

Contents of Theophrastean Studies: On Natural Science, Physics and Metaphysics, Ethics, Religion and Rhetoric include Scientific Opuscala: “The Structure and Function of Theophrastus’ Treatise De odoribus, Botany and Ecology: “Theophrastus as Ecologist,” and Physics and Metaphysics: “Theophrastus on Place.”

William W. Fortenbaugh is a professor emeritus of classics at Rutgers University. He founded the Rutgers University Studies in Classical Humanities (RUSCH) series and is the current series editor. William worked with David Mirhady to create Peripatetic Rhetoric After Aristotle, with the book edited by both of them. David Mirhady is professor and former chair of the Department of Humanities, Simon Fraser University, with publications focusing on Greek law, oratory, and rhetoric.
